Depaartment Overview

History

Established in 1963, the Department of Radio and Television of NTUA was formerly recognized as a three-year diploma program in the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. It was then reorganized into a four-year Bachelor's Degree program in 1994, and the department started its Master of Art program (MA) in 2007. The university also established the Graduate School of Applied Media Arts in the year 2000. There were two programs for students to major in, i.e., MA (theories) and MFA (creation). Due to the consideration of university’s development, the Graduate School of Applied Media Arts merged into the Department of Radio and Television in 2009, as the department retained its name. The department currently has a daytime undergraduate program, a continuing education undergraduate program in the evenings, a two-year continuing education undergraduate program during the weekends, a master degree program (the RTV master degree program, including the RTV section and the AMA section), and an AMA continuing education master degree program. The goals, the curriculum structure and the direction for future development of the department are as follows:

Undergraduate Program

The aim of the undergraduate programs is to cultivate students to be professional talents with sophistication in the humanities and fine arts. The program also closely follows the government's policy on media technology and plans out a fully digitalized educational environment. In addition, to combine theoretical and practical knowledge, the department has run the <Da-guan Newspaper> since 1986 as the student practical training on newspaper, and a campus radio station of FM 88.3, named “VOTA” since 1999 to allow students to have practical experience in producing programs. In addition, in year 2000, the “Da-guan E-News” website was established to enable students' ability of wholistic news gathering and editing skills.

The RTV Master Degree Program

Since the 2015 academic year, the Graduate School is merged with the Graduate School of Applied Media Arts, and the program is divided into the MA section for radio and television, and the MFA section for applied media arts.

The radio and television section:

The purpose of the Master Program of Radio and Television is to combine the artistic resources and the new media science and technology research of NTUA to train professional artistic talents, and to prepare a necessary professional research plan for the domestic media environment, through the cooperation between the industry and the academic institution. Therefore, the curriculum is divided into three fields of study, namely:

  1. Research on media industry and related policies and laws
  2. Advanced professional media content production
  3. Interdisciplinary media study and practical integration.    

This course design focuses on combining the emphases of the management and marketing strategy of the current film and media industry in the analysis of related regulations and policies. At the same time, the course also strengthens students' analytic ability on communication issues, including the interdisciplinary research of the political, social, economic and cultural studies, and audience effect and related specific field study.

The Master Program of Applied Media Arts:

The Master Program of Applied Media Arts is focused on creation. The educational goal is to cultivate talents both for the academic research on the aesthetics in film and video and for advanced media content production. Through the evaluation of the domestic development in the communication educational environment and the communication industry mechanism, as well as through the review of the foreign related academic development context, the following goals are set:

  1. To cultivate students to be talents of advanced media technology professionals and film and video aesthetics academic researchers through combining media, communication technology and aesthetic study.
  2. To cultivate students to be high-level artistic administrators and academic researchers through media art theory and management studies.
  3. To cultivate students to be well-needed management and marketing professionals in the media industry through the exploration of changes of media technology and industry in the social, historical, political, economic and cultural aspects.
  4. To develop fully integrated media production and research through interdisciplinary training across academic fields and media viewpoints.
  5. To carry out the national plan of cultivating professional media talents in order to deepen and broaden film and video culture research.

Direction for future development

In response to the future development trend in the media industry, the Department is dedicated to cultivate the well-needed talents in the future new media technology and the audio-visual industry, through a more precise curriculum planning and a cooperation scheme among the government, the academic institution and the industry.
